Break the Cycle – TriJam#203

The theme for TriJam 203 was “Cycle is Broken”. I decided to make a simple bullet hell game where the player character is stuck in a dream-like hell with no seeming way to escape. All they can do is dodge the enemy’s attacks! The game was made in Godot 3.5.

Of course there is a twist and in this case I chose to have that be that for each death the player gains some ability from the enemy as they become more a part of the nightmare world themselves.

I largely used pre-made assets for this game, utilising an old character design from a top down shoot-em up prototype for the main character, however I made the snake boss in Aseprite and Krita during the jam. I was quite pleased with this, especially given how quickly I managed to make the monster design.

This game took just over 4 hours to make. I missed the 3 hour deadline by about 15 minutes but because I liked the idea I decided to push forward and add some polish to make the game play better. Overall I really liked this idea.
