This Year’s Game Jam Entries – 2022 Edition
This year Drentsoft Games took part in several very fun game jams. While I have taken part in several Ludum Dares in the past Ludum Dare 50 marks the first since Drentsoft Games was officially founded. During this jam I tried my hand at creating a rhythm gym game. To keep my skills honed while trying to get our first card game A Taste for the King out and have some easier content for game development streams I also started taking part in TriJams. These are weekend events which focus on creating small, fun and playable games that can be created in 3 hours of development time (programming/testing/asset creation). Design documentation and building process do not count towards the 3 hours. It’s surprisingly do-able with enough design work and preparation and while quite stressful is great fun (and kind of addictive).
I also took part in a couple of Godot Wild Jams though this year actually saw a decline due to my efforts to finish A Taste for the King. Godot Wild Jam is a monthly week (and a bit) long game jam that focuses solely on Godot developers. I really like Godot Wild Jam because it gives you a lot of time to get a project finished, either splitting your time over the week to make a smaller project or going all the way to make a game full-time for that week.
Flipping Symmetry (Flip Control) was an entry to Godot Wild Jam 47 which actually came about due to the theme matching an idea for a board game I had recently thought up. While it’s quite clunky in its jam state, it allowed me to see the potential in the game and I actually took a version of it to a global playtest group where it was met with great interest! I am looking to work on this perhaps fulltime once A Taste for the King has been released. Until then, I am aiming to work on it as a consistent streaming video game project because it seems like a good bridge between people who come to see video game development on stream and the other half of my audience who are board/card gamers.
